| Question:
|
What is an 'EIN'? |
| |
|
| Answer: |
EIN means Employer Identification Number. It is a nine-digit number and even if the
nonprofit you are creating is going to be run entirely by volunteers and has no paid employees,
the organization still is required to get an EIN. The form 1023 asks for the EIN. If the
organization opens a checking account, it needs to give the bank an EIN. You'll use the EIN a lot.
EIN's are obtained by using IRS form SS-4. Form SS-4 can be obtained by calling the IRS or using
its web site. SS-4 can be mailed in at the same time the form 1023 is being sent. Or the SS-4 can be
faxed to the IRS office in Cincinnati, Ohio. |
